A few days ago I thawed out some ground beef to make taco meat. Just before I started frying it, I realised I was out of taco seasoning. (I usually buy those Old El Paso envelopes or the house brand version.) Since I didn’t want to run to the store, I figured it can’t be too hard to mix up my own spice blend. A few google searches and some combined ideas and this is what I made:
2 tsp of Ancho Powder. (I ground this myself from anchos a while back)
2 tsp of JalapeƱo Powder. (I grew, dehydrated, and ground this myself.)
2 tsp of Hot Chili Powder. (This and everything following was store bought.)
4 tsp Cumin.
2 tsp Smoked Paprika
2 tsp Sea Salt
2 tsp Ground Black Pepper
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Onion Powder
1 tsp Oregano
1/2 tsp MSG (Yeah, yeah, I’m not going to debate you. You can leave it out if you want.)
Sadly I didn’t write down how much I used with my 1 lb of meat. I think it was 2 tbsp. (So, this recipe should make three 1lb batches of meat.)
Fry the ground beef until brown. Drain any excess fat. Add the powder and 1 cup of water. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat and simmer until the liquid is mostly gone.
